It took a second half Oribe Peralta goal, but Mexico edged Panama in their last warm-up game ahead of the CONCACAF Hexagonal.

Here are my three takeaways from Mexico’s win over Panama:

Shallow game but Mexico win

All things considered, this was a desperately shallow game between Mexico and Panama. Beyond a brief flashpoint from Giovani dos Santos in the 43rd minute, the first half was one to forget. Mexico was far from satisfying, struggling in holding the ball up-high and finding a cutting edge, only receiving a boost in the second half when Hirving Lozano came on for Isaac Brizuela.

A goal eventually came in the 59th minute. Oribe Peralta seized on a perfect pass laid on by Giovani dos Santos after some good work from Lozano. But that was it. Other than Oribe Peralta’s goal, a late Moisés Muñoz save, and a bitter exchange of words between players near the end of the game, this was a snoozefest.

Giovani dos Santos has earned his spot

If for whatever reason one decides to go back and watch these past two Mexico games, the one player that clearly stands out is Giovani dos Santos. The LA Galaxy forward produced another energetic performance on Tuesday, notching an assist in Peralta’s goal.

Sure, Giovani didn’t look 100% like his old self, but he did show some spine. Both his performances were spirited — against New Zealand, Giovani did plenty of the dirty work, and against Panama, he essentially gave the game-winning assist. Moreover, he didn’t gradually fade as in so many previous matches with the national team.

Osorio’s hope was these games would offer Giovani a general lift in confidence after a lengthy absence with El Tri. It is fair to say Gio has benefited from these pair of friendlies and should be one of the names in Mexico’s squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers.

Osorio still a man under pressure

No doubt, albeit wins, many will see these past two friendlies as further proof of Juan Carlos Osorio’s “hapless” campaign in front of El Tri. For many in Mexican sports media who appear more interested in criticizing Osorio than making a brief analysis of the games, they will petulantly take the airwaves to complain, senselessly adding more pressure to the situation.

The fact of the matter is, if Juan Carlos Osorio doesn’t get results against the United States and Panama next month, he is gone. The Colombian has been so far removed by the press that there is no margin for error. In November, it’s two good games or be sent packing.

A second half goal from Oribe Peralta saw Mexico beat Panama 1-0 in their final preparation game ahead of the start of the CONCACAF Hexagonal.

From the start, Mexico struggled to find space to create chances, but should have taken the lead, with Giovani dos Santos spurning a clear chance and forcing Panama goalkeeper Jose Calderon to a good save.

The game improved after the break, and El Tri took the lead in the 59th minute. Hirving Lozano escaped his marker and picked out Giovani dos Santos, who sent a perfect cross for Oribe Peralta to fire home.

Panama’s best chance to equalize didn’t come until the very last minute of the game. Moises Muñoz made a fine save to deny Armando Cooper at the death as Mexico escaped with with the win.

The next time El Tri take the field will be in Columbus, Ohio in November 11 to take on the United States in the start of the Hexagonal.

Juan Carlos Osorio makes wholesale changes to the team that earned a 2-1 victory over New Zealand on Saturday. For starters, Moises Munoz gets the start in net after Jose de Jesus Corona had a decent performance against the All Whites.

Osorio also decides to changes formation, with Adrian Aldrete making it a line of four at the back. Jordan Silva, Hugo Ayala, and Hedgardo Marin all keep their place in the side.

In the midfield, El Tri fans will finally catch a glimpse of youngsters Orbelin Pineda and Erick Gutierrez playing together. For both, it will be their first start with the senior national team.

Finally, Mexico’s trio of attackers will be made of Oribe Peralta, Isaac Brizuela, and Giovani dos Santos.

You will be able to watch the game at 10pm EST on Unimas, Univision Deportes Network, and fuboTV.

On the back of a 2-1 win over New Zealand, the Mexico national team travel to Bridgeview, Illinois to take on Panama in their final warm-up game ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifiers.

In a little more than a month’s time, both Mexico and Panama will be meeting at the Rommel Fernández in their second game of World Cup qualifying. With a bigger game looming, this friendly doesn’t exactly put the teams in the best of positions, and both coaches will likely not want to reveal too much ahead of next month’s clash.

Still, for several players in El Tri, this game carries a fairly large importance if they want to be part of Mexico’s squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers. Among those is Giovani dos Santos, who scored a goal and looked bright against New Zealand.

But it is not just players who have something to prove. Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio could do with another win. His status still holds the most talk across Mexico, and a negative result here would mean added pressure he doesn’t need.

Before both teams meet again in World Cup qualifying on November 15, Mexico and Panama face each other in a friendly in Bridgeview, Illinois.

Here is what to watch for in Mexico’s last game before the hexagonal.

What to watch for:

Four-man backline - On Saturday, coach Juan Carlos Osorio took on New Zealand with a starting lineup of only three defenders, a decision seemingly based around the players he had as much as trying out new tactics. The defense’s movement was decent, but they looked shaky and didn’t offer the confidence at the back to compensate for their lack of cohesiveness.

Now, three days later, Mexico are faced with a different challenge, and with it a new formation? It’s always difficult to read too much into Juan Carlos Osorio, but it seems likely he’ll return to a four-man backline against Panama on Tuesday.

Mexico never looked completely secure, and the suspicion is El Tri would do better with a pair of fullbacks on the field. This, then, means Jorge Torres Nilo and Jesús Dueñas could have a shot at impressing Osorio and winning a starting spot for Columbus, especially considering Paul Aguilar will be out injured.

Injuries upon injuries - So many of Juan Carlos Osorio’s decisions for this call-up have been conditioned by injuries. Of the original 23 players Juan Carlos Osorio called up for these friendlies, four have picked up and injury. The latest casualty for El Tri was Alan Pulido, who is listed as questionable after receiving a hard knock to his knee.

To make matters worse for the coach, Marco Fabian has traveled back to Germany to prepare for the game against Bayern Munich at request of Eintracht Frankfurt.

This is far from the first time we’ve seen these type of injury crisis under Juan Carlos Osorio, but El Tri fans can at least take solace it didn’t happen to the A-team. Nevertheless, there would have been a real interest to see how individuals like Jonathan dos Santos and a healthy Alan Pulido did in a system like Osorio’s. That, however, seems like it will have to wait for another time. In turn, this could mean increased minutes for Giovani dos Santos or Oribe Peralta.

Preview of things to come? - The one big caveat to this match is both Mexico and Panama will meet again in a month for World Cup qualifying. How each side performs against each on Tuesday could say a lot, but the fact of the matter is, both teams will want to save their best for November. Sure, there will be some hints, not least considering Panama love to sit back against Mexico, but it will be difficult to say whether this game will provide enough evidence for both coaches.

Still, confidence can be everything heading into World Cup qualifying, and this game is still one Mexico is expected to win.
