Mexico was finally able to get a complete list of the rivals they will be facing in the 2022 World Cup qualification. While the draw for the eight team final round had occurred, it wasn’t until this week that the final three CONCACAF teams to make the final round were official. Panama, Canada, and El Salvador were the final teams to book their tickets and will now take part in a very congested schedule that starts in September and will consist of three games played in the majority of the FIFA breaks.
The schedule is as follows (The home team is mentioned first):
September 2: Mexico vs Jamaica
September 5: Costa Rica vs Mexico
September 8: Panama vs Mexico
October 7: Mexico vs Canada
October 10: Mexico vs Honduras
October 13: El Salvador vs Mexico
November United States vs Mexico
November Canada vs Mexico
2022
January 27: Jamaica vs Mexico
January 30: Mexico vs Costa Rica
February 2: Mexico vs Panama
March 24: Mexico vs United States
March 27: Honduras vs Mexico
March 30: Mexico vs El Salvador
There is still no date for the November FIFA break. Mexico has also yet to announce which venue they will used for their home matches, although it probably will be Estadio Azteca. That being said, with the possibility of fines or even a possible ban for the infamous “Grito” there is a strong possibility that Mexico will not have a single venue for every game. Also with so much travel, Mexico might not want to host games in the altitude of Mexico City, as having three games means that this will be a new way of playing World Cup qualifiers for Mexico and the rest of the team as well as having eight teams in the final round. During Gerardo Martino’s tenure, Mexico has only played once in Estadio Azteca. The match was a 3-1 victory over Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League.
