Club Leon have announce that they failed to reach an agreement with head coach Ignacio Ambriz, which means that he will depart from his position once the season ends. Through Twitter, the club announced they had tried to reach an agreement but just weren’t able to, meaning that this season will be the last for the current champions under Ambriz. There will be a lot of speculation on what will be his move, especially since a lot of it could be to replace veteran coach Ricardo Ferretti in Tigres, who will also depart once the season ends or even to a possible move to Europe, where he was an assistant in Osasuna and Atletico Madrid when Javier Aguirre was at the helm.
“Nacho” Ambriz was a notable Mexican player who mostly played with Necaxa, where he won two league titles and was good enough to get to the Mexican National Team, winning the 1993 Gold Cup and playing in the 1994 World Cup. After the great career and a spell as coach in Puebla, he became the main assistant to Javier Aguirre after Aguirre went to coach in Spain at Osasuna and later in Atletico Madrid. Ambriz would later start his career as the head coach in Club San Luis, then a short spell in both Queretaro and Chivas. His prestige as a former NT player and as an assistant to Aguirre was good enough to get a prime job at Club America, where he won a CONCACAF Champions League. He did however fail to get a Liga MX, title and his bad performance in the Club World Cup ended his tenure. He then went to his old team in Necaxa, where he won a Copa MX before moving to Leon. At Leon, he had his best years coaching, making Leon the best playing team in Mexico. He tied the record of most consecutive wins with 12 (a record Cruz Azul just tied this season but couldn’t pass) and got first place in the league that season, but failed to win the Liga MX title after falling in the final against Tigres.
Leon continued being one of the best if not the best and once again in the Apertura 2020, he had the best playing team that clinched first place. This time though, he was finally able to get a Liga MX title after defeating Pumas. The season started slow and had some troubles like the failure in the CONCACAF Champions League against Toronto FC, but the team is set to get to the repechaje and it’s understandable that Leon would want to extend his contract, but it seems that Ambriz has chosen to move to another team. There is a strong speculation that he will be going to Tigres, although the talks before the recent news was that it was going to be Miguel Herrera who would replace Ferretti. Yet Ambriz right now is doing better than Herrera, who was fired from his last job with America. Ambriz could also go to Europe, where he has said before he wanted to coach especially in his old club Osasuna. Time will tell, but as of now he will try to get a second straight title and end his great tenure in Leon on a high note.
