Pachuca hosts Chivas on Monday night as the struggling teams look to save their seasons, and possibly the jobs of their coaches. Pachuca sits in last place, having scored one goal on their own this season (the other goal you see in the standings was an own goal). Chivas meanwhile will hope to get a repeat performance of their last away game on a Monday when they shocked Liga MX Champions Leon (before returning home to another lackluster match against Necaxa).
Pachuca’s season has been a total disappointment, although some of it was something many people saw coming. Although they got to the Liguilla last season, Pachuca went out after failing to score a goal in 180 minutes against Pumas even when they created a lot of dangerous chances. Thus they knew they were weak at forward and thought they fixed this hole by signing Mauro Quiroga from San Luis even after losing striker Victor Davila to Leon. Quiroga though has been terrible so far, missing numerous chances even though he scored their only goal scored by the team. Otherwise Pachuca’s only goal came from an own goal by Queretaro. Because of their lack of goals, Pachuca currently sits in last place and there are a lot of rumors that Coach Paulo Pezzolano’s job might be on the line on Monday. They will need to improve against a Chivas team that has struggled but not as much as they have.
Chivas’ season has once again failed to live up to expectations. After getting to the semifinals last season, Chivas came out with two ties and two losses in their first four matches. The fact that the only highly rated team they faced was Toluca made things even worse. Then to the surprise of everybody, they got the first win of the season in an away match against Leon, the current Liga MX Champion. Things looked like they have picked up, but they followed that game with another lackluster match, getting a last minute tie at home against Necaxa, in a match they were highly favored. Coach Victor Manuel Vucetich is struggling as once again Chivas looks like a team that can’t create much opportunities with most of their attacks being totally predictable. Yet the might be favored on Monday as they face a Pachuca team that has struggled even worse both in results and with creating opportunities. It’s a great situation for them to bounce back, but should they failed to do so, it will complicate things severely for Chivas and especially Vucetich.
