Club America announced their first big signings under new coach Santiago Solari, acquiring Pedro Aquino from Liga MX champion Leon and Alan Medina from Toluca. Aquino is one of the top defensive midfielders in Mexico and was key in Leon title while Medina is a top prospect. America will be sending Ruben Gonzalez in exchange for Aquino to Leon.
With new coach Santiago Solari, America seems to be trying to get an impactful player especially at defensive midfielder, where they have suffered ever since Guido Rodriguez left for Spanish club Real Betis. Thus the interest on Pedro Aquino, one of the top players in the position. Peruvian international Aquino, came through Sporting Cristal before arriving in Mexico with Lobos BUAP. After a good spell at the club he moved to Leon, where he became a key player. Aquino was good enough to be part of Peru’s 2018 World Cup team where he played all three games. Aquino was part of the good Leon teams that won both Superlideratos and who just recently became Liga MX champion. In exchange Leon will acquire Ruben “Oso” Gonzalez, who had a good spell in Necaxa but never fulfilled America’s plan for him to replace Guido Rodriguez. Yet Leon could take advantage of his talent as they have been very good at reviving careers like they recently did with Jose Ramirez.
America’s acquisition of Alan Medina is an interesting move. While at times he was a very exciting offensive prospect, he never became a top player with Toluca although he constantly showed flashes. Medina had been a target for America from the start of the offseason, even when America was yet to start their participation in the Concacaf Champions League. Although Coach Solari didn’t ask for the signing, he should be an interesting player that should add offensive spark to the team, something they seemed to be missing in recent games.
