Santos Laguna Femenil announced the passing of head coach Martín Pérez due to complications from COVID-19. Pérez “was a great human being and excellent partner, followed all of the protocols and corresponding treatments, however in the end was one more victim of this pandemic that ails not only this country, but the entire world” according to the club’s statement. The club later also said “We call on people to redouble efforts and continue to carry out the necessary preventative measures and follow the protocols that our authorities give out.”
The Mexico City native, who turned 57 on January 2, took over for Jorge Macías prior to the start of the 2020 Clausura. Before that, Pérez was an assistant with Santos’ U15s, U17s, and Liga Premier team as well as managing the U17s for the 2019 Clausura.

There has been no word on a replacement, although Assistant Jorge Campos was behind the bench for Santos’ match against Pachuca. Former manager Macías is also still with the club as an assistant with the (varonil) U17s. FMF State of Mind has learned that the club’s match against Chivas on Monday, January 25th will go on as scheduled in Guadalajara.
