Club Queretaro annnouced that Alex Diego will be their new coach, replacing Victor Manuel Vucetich, who didn’t reach an agreement with the team. Diego will be making his debut in Liga MX after coaching in the Ascenso, first with Alebrijes de Oaxaca and later at Atlante. Diego was a player who mostly had his career with Pumas, winning a Liga MX title in 2009 but never really making it out of the role of being a substitute even though he had a good reputation as a solid prospect. He would later start his career coaching the youth teams in Pumas, and will be a new addition in a league that is famous for keeping old coaches.
Alex Diego started his career in Jaguares de Chiapas before moving to Pumas. In Pumas he had the bulk of his career. Diego was one of several prospects but would never really pan out. With prospects like Pablo Barrera, Efrain Juarez, David Cabrera, and Efrain Velarde shining through, Diego was left behind. He would be part of the squad that won the 2009 Clausura Liga MX title, the only one he would win. After Pumas decided to stop waiting, they shipped him to Atlante. He would fail to make a place in the team and he left for a year to play in the Ascenso with Lobos BUAP. He would return to Atlante but fail to make a place there. He would last play in Delfines del Carmen, and retire after a spell with Alebrijes. Diego would then move back to Pumas to coach the youth teams. Later he would get a chance to coach in the Ascenso with Alebrijes de Oaxaca, his final team in his career as a player. Later he would coach another team he played in, Atlante, this time in Ascenso. Diego now makes his debut in Liga MX. He will have a tough situation as Queretaro is not in good financial form, which forced the team to be sold. There are strong rumors that the teams plans to become Atlante and move to Mexico City but it will remain in Queretaro for the time being. Diego will need to take advantage of this opportunity as young managers aren’t normally given chances as veteran coaches get most of them. Diego will hope to make a splash as a young coach who didn’t really have much of a playing career, he will probably have a short leash.
