It’s never just another game when Mexico and the United States clash. On Friday in East Rutherford, New Jersey the current CONCACAF champs take on the United States Men’s National Team in their first meeting since last July’s Gold Cup Final.
El Tri arrive to this match with a full-strength side and looking to extend their recent dominance over their North American rivals after going unbeaten in four of the last five matches versus the stars and stripes.
But U.S. soccer will have another chance of tackling their incessant feeling of inadequacy and inferiority towards Mexican soccer by playing Mexico in the only type of match they have had real success over El Tri, friendlies. Indeed,Mexico has not been able to defeat the U.S. in an international friendly since 1984.
Of course, there is more to this match than a friendly history lesson. Both teams will have plenty of their stars on display, with Hirving “Chucky” Lozano and Christian Pulisic comparisons already being a topic of hot debate among both set of fans. El Tri will also see the return of Hector Herrera, Jesus Manuel “Tecatito” Corona and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez back into the national team frame. Along with Gerardo Martino’s unbeaten streak as Mexico National Team manager, there is no shortage of topic points for what promises to be another exciting rivalry match between the kings of CONCACAF and the U.S.
