Tigres UANL beat rivals Monterrey 2-0 thanks to second half goals from Lucas Zelarayan and Andre-Pierre Gignac at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer on Saturday.
Tigres started the the evening as the better side and came close grabbing the breakthrough after only six minutes when a Javier Aquino cross came sailing dangerously across the Monterrey box.
Chances then became few and far between until the second half. Substitute Lucas Zelarayan provided an injection of excitement off the bench when Marcelo Barovero left a rebound for the Argentine to pounce and give Tigres the lead.
Monterrey had their chances to claw back into the game. First Carlos Rodriguez failed to direct a shot on target following a great play down the right-hand side. Then Vincent Janssen had an excellent header saved by Nahuel Guzman.
In the 82nd minute, Andre-Pierre Gignac put the game to bed, heading in a corner past Barovero for the 2-0 and condemning Monterrey to their third defeat in five matches.
With the result, Tigres temporarily move up to seventh in the league table with 17 points, while defeat sees Monterrey fall to tenth and outside Liguilla standings.
