Chivas Guadalajara were 1-0 winners over rivals Atlas on Saturday with Alexis Vega grabbing the only goal of this season’s Clásico Tapatio.
The win was a much-needed one for Chivas coach Tomas Boy, who was under pressure for much of the lead-up to this match.
After Atlas’s 3-0 win over Club América, the Rojinegros came in looking to expand on their good form but struggled for much of the early stages of the game.
On the other hand, Chivas had difficulty turning their possession into clear chances, although Alexis Vega did put the Atlas defense under pressure on two occasions in the first half.
At the restart, Atlas had perhaps their best chance of the game when a Ricardo Alvarez cross fell into the path of Facundo Barcelo, who failed to direct his shot on target.
The home-side then got in front in the 63rd minute when Vega unleashed an arching shot from long range past Camilo Vargas to put the Rojiblancos in front.
Ten minutes later, Atlas almost got on leveled terms, but Jairo Torres had his effort from distanced blocked by Chivas goalkeeper Raul Gudiño.
With Atlas running out of ideas on the attack, their search for an equalizer seemingly came to an end in the 80th minute when Jorge Segura was sent off with a second yellow.
Up a man and up in the scoreline, Chivas even twice came close to doubling their lead. But at the end, the 1-0 was enough to give the Rojiblancos their third win of the season and their third in a row over rivals Atlas.
