You may notice something a little different with Santos Laguna’s kits when they take the field against Club León. Each field player will be wearing a black goalkeeper’s jersey to pay homage to a goalkeeper from the club’s history. The club has spent August paying tribute to the club’s netminders, and while the nameplate on each jersey will be the player’s name, the jock tag on the bottom of the shirt will have the name of a goalkeeper who represented Santos.
The club will honor goalkeepers from Joel Gustavo Flores Contreras, who was the club’s very first goalkeeper back in 1983, to historical players like Olaf Heredia, Oswaldo Sánchez, and Agustín Marchesín all the way to current players Jonathan Orozco and Carlos Acevedo. The black jerseys should provide a contrast to León’s green kits or their green and yellow third jerseys. On Santos’ 35th anniversary, they wore a commemorative kit but were forced by León to switch at halftime when the visitors complained the jerseys were too similar and that they hadn’t brought a second set of kits with them.
