For the second time in more than a month, Club América and Tigres clash in American soil as both Liga MX contenders face off in the Semifinals of the Leagues Cup.

Previously, Club América and Tigres participated in the Campeon de Campeones Cup where Las Águilas took home the victory through a penalty shootout. Now both teams get to meet again with a ticket to the inaugural Leagues Cup Final on the line.

For América fans, this game has the potential to be somewhat special. This could be the first time they see Guillermo Ochoa back in the yellow and blue since the Mexico National Team legend made his long-awaited return to Las Águilas. “Memo” is in the active América roster, and Miguel Herrera has hinted that the stage is set for a possible first start versus Tigres.

Of course, beyond Ochoa’s anticipated return, there is obviously also the fact that these are two of the teams on everybody’s mind when they think of contenders for the Liga MX title. Both clubs have had consistent starts to the Liga MX season and this could undoubtedly be a preview of a match that we could see in the Liguilla come the month of December.

Then there is also the fact that these are two teams almost always obligated to win, no matter the tournament they are in. After América’s disappointment in the Campeones Cup versus Atlanta United, this is one tournament Las Águilas won’t want to concede. On the other hand, in the past Tigres’s owns claims of being one of the biggest teams in Mexico have been highly disputed, and if they plan on backing these claims up, these are the kind of tournaments Los Felinos need to win.
