Club América confirmed on Friday that Ajax have completed the signing of Edson Alvarez for a rumored $17 million making him the most expensive sale to a European club in Águilas history.

Alvarez, 21, is set to travel to Amsterdam in the next few hours to undergo a medical before agreeing all terms with the defending Eredivisie champions.

Previously, the versatile defender had also attracted interest from the English Premier League after helping the Mexico National Team reach its eighth Gold Cup title, but it appears like the Dutch club was always his preferred destination.

Capped 28 times by Mexico, Alvarez has already participated in one World Cup, where he played in all four matches for El Tri in 2018. With Club América, Alvarez won one Liga MX title and one Copa MX title.

Alvarez will link up with fellow Mexicans Hirving “Chucky” Lozano and Erick Gutierrez in the Dutch Eredivisie.
