The two best Liga MX teams of the last decade face off on Sunday as the 2019 Campeon de Campeones Cup is on the line when Tigres UANL and Club América clash at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
A glorified friendly, some might say, but at the end of the day it is the first major trophy available in the Liga MX calendar year. The Campeon de Campeones Cup reunites the winners of the 2018 Liga MX Apertura and the 2019 Liga MX Clausura, in a game in which coincidentally Liga MX fans will catch their first competitive glimpse of two of the teams that will no doubt be in the discussion for favorites for the upcoming 2019 Liga MX Apertura.
On the one hand, Tigres are the defending Liga MX champs, and despite what coach Ricardo “Tuca” Ferretti might tell you, recently this is a tournament Los Felinos have taken quite seriously, winning each of the last three Campeon de Campeones.
On the other hand, for Club América, this game might be less about the glory of winning this title and more about avoiding defeat. Miguel Herrera’s side have had an underwhelming preseason, and for a team that is constantly on the front page of all of Mexico’s sporting newspapers, a defeat prior to the start of the new season would only create further uncertainty.
At the end of the day, these are two teams that live or die off winning trophies, and whether they like it or not, this match is about exactly that. Will it be Tigres or will it be Las Águilas who lift the trophy?
