The Mexico National Team will set in motion their 2019 Gold Cup campaign when this Saturday they take on Cuba in Pasadena’s Rose Bowl.

El Tri arrive to this Gold Cup as the big favorites to win the title and on paper have a relatively easy start to their tournament. In 12 previous meetings with Cuba, El Tri has won in all 12 and have conceded just one goal in their last seven versus the Cubans.

That said, the narrative for Mexico on the lead up to this tournament has been the sheer amount of absences in El Tri’s squad, with players like Hector Herrera, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Hirving “Chucky” Lozano all absent due to personal reasons or injury.

Make no mistake about it, no matter who is on the field, Mexico is obligated to win, and beyond what El Tri fans hope will be a dominant scoreline, Mexico will hope this is the start to a growing confidence ahead of a possible run to the title.
