Sanchez’s name can be added to a long list of absences for El Tri, which includes names like Miguel Layun and Hirving “Chucky” Lozano. Sanchez will be replaced by LA Galaxy forward Uriel Antuna.
Sanchez’s injury further complicates things for coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who is already dealing with a knock on one of his key center backs, Hector Moreno. With increasing speculation that Moreno won’t be available until at least the second round of the competition, this leaves Mexico with just 22 players available for the group stage phase.
Sanchez’s injury also means that El Tri will be short a full back, with the only natural left back being Jesus Gallardo.
The Mexico National Team will make its debut in the 2019 Gold Cup this Saturday against Cuba.
