Barring another major development, Club América vs. Club León will take place at the Estadio Corregidora this Thursday as part of the 2019 Liga MX Clausura Semifinals. Previously, the game was set to take place on Wednesday at the Estadio Azteca, but air pollution meant the game had to be moved outside the Mexico City region.
For Club América, this is their fourth consecutive appearance in the Liga MX Semifinals after lifting the league title in last season’s 2018 Apertura. Miguel Herrera’s men arrive to this match after beating Cruz Azul in the previous round, and while it wasn’t their best performance, psychologically it was a huge boost beating one of their biggest rivals in the Quarterfinals stage.
Meanwhile, León dominated on their way to the Semifinals. Ignacio Ambriz’s men showed exactly why they finished the regular season as the best team in Mexico by smashing Xolos de Tijuana 5-2 on aggregate.
Venue circus aside, for La Fiera this is something of a statement game. Despite a record-breaking regular season, they have had their handful of doubters. Coach Ignacio Ambriz has always maintained that their number one goal has always been the Liga MX title, and here they have a genuine opportunity to show it against the defending champs.
Who will take an advantage heading into the second leg? Will it be Club León or will it be América?
