Monterrey will play in the fourth Clásico Regio this calendar year as they face off, once again, against Tigres in a knock-out competition. Monterrey already drew 1-1 against Tigres in the regular season at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer and while they also drew 1-1 in the Concacaf Champions League finals match at home, they brought a 1-0 first leg victory into the match and were crowned champions at the end of the night.
Despite fears that he would not play in the second leg against Necaxa at home, Rogelio Funes Mori played in the 1-0 victory over the weekend that saw Monterrey advance because of their higher seed. Los Rayados won’t be able to rely on that tie-breaker in this round, as they are the number two seed, while Tigres comes in as the number two seed and the tiebreaker if the two teams are level after two legs, with the ‘away-goal’ rule not counting in the Liguilla.
Monterrey will hope that they have broken whatever curse that Tigres have had over them in play at the BBVA Bancomer and pick up a good win at home, as they will have to go to El Volcán, the Estadio Universitario where Tigres play in San Nicolas de los Garza, Nuevo León, in the second leg, which is always a difficult place to pick up points. Monterrey will also be looking for some revenge for their Femenil side that lost in the championship match to Tigres at home earlier in the week.
A Clásico Regio is always special, and one in the Liguilla is even more special. Monterrey will be hoping that they continue their luck over their rivals and get another win.
