After losing the First Leg 3-1 ro rivals Club América, Cruz Azul will need to go against history if they want to qualify to the Semifinals of the 2019 Liga MX Clausura as they take on Las Águilas at the Estadio Azteca.

Cruz Azul has never advanced over América in a Quarterfinals stage and arrives to this match on the back of 15 straight Liga MX games without a win over the Azulcremas. Currently, the math says La Máquina needs to win by two goals or more to qualify to the final four, but that’s something they haven’t been able to do in the Liguilla against América since 1999.

For Las Águilas, it is business as usual. América are built for these type of moments, and as they demonstrated in the First Leg, they are not the type of team you can take lightly. Though the away goal could play a big role in this return leg, anything less than a place in the Semifinals would be seen as a massive collapse from Miguel Herrera’s men.

That said, it became quite clear during this year’s Champions League Knockout stage that anything can happen in two-legged ties. For a team as desperate as Cruz Azul, any inspiration they can take is welcomed.
