If the pressure to perform well tonight against Sporting KC wasn’t big enough already for Monterrey, it just got a lot more as crosstown rivals Tigres came out and blew the doors off of Santos Laguna to the tune of a 3-0 victory at home last night. The hosts put up three goals in just over a half-hour of play, and easily could have scored a couple more. Santos will now have a very tough task ahead of them in the second leg of the semifinal.
Los Rayados are coming off of yet another disappointing draw, as they drew 2-2 with Cruz Azul last weekend after grabbing a 2-0 lead in the second half. Monterrey once again allowed two late goals, with Cruz Azul scoring in the 76th minute and in stoppage time to grab what seemed like an unlikely draw.
Sporting Kansas City are coming off of a 7-1 thumping of the Montreal Impact in MLS play over the weekend. They already have beaten a Liga MX team in their Concacaf Champions League travels this year, as they defeated Toluca 5-0 on aggregate and then put away CA Independiente in the second leg 3-0 to progress.
Sporting KC look to be one of the main contenders this year for the MLS Cup, and despite the victory over Atlanta United, this semifinal might be the toughest MLS match-up that Monterrey will have ever faced. On paper, this is the kind of match that Monterrey should be winning without a problem, but los Rayados haven’t been showing how good they are as of late, having gone without a win in their last four matches in all competitions.
The heat will be on Diego Alonso to get this team to produce a good win, so here’s hoping that this team can respond and put this semifinal series away with a big win at home.
