Club León’s Ángel Mena was named Liga Bancomer MX Player of the Week for the second time this season, this time for Jornada 12, by a poll of Liga MX English-language writers and broadcasters.
Mena had two goals in León’s 3-2 comeback win on Friday evening against Monarcas Morelia.
Morelia surprised all by leading 2-0 to start the game, but Leon managed to get a goal back before Mena put his cape on. After a handball from Alberto Acosta, a penalty was called in the 67th minute. Leon’s leading goalscorer stepped up to the plate and put the ball easily past Sebastian Sosa to tie things up.
Later on, with just under 10 minutes to play, Leon’s Yairo Moreno raced down the left wing before passing it inside and finding Mena. Jose Juan Macias feigned the reception and let the ball roll to the Ecuadorian who took his time to get the perfect shot off with his left foot. Just like that, La Fiera’s comeback was fulfilled.
“Two late goals to complete a comeback and keep a long winning streak alive gets my attention.” - Tom Buckley, Viva Liga MX
Mena had 39 accurate passes during the game, good for 89 pecrent accuracy, and also won seven out of his 12 duels to earn an 8.5 match rating from SofaScore.
Mena’s eleven goals this season make him the leading goalscorer in Liga Bancomer MX and his eight assists make him lead that category league-wide as well.
Leon is currently the top club in Mexico with 29 points as well as the highest scoring offense with 28 goals. Ignacio Ambriz’s side is currently on a nine-game win streak, having not dropped a single league point since Jan. 27.
This is the second time Mena has received Player of the Week honors this season. The Ecuadorian international was named POTW for Jornada 6 as well.
