Rayados de Monterrey’s Dorlan Pabón was named Liga Bancomer MX Player of the Week for Jornada 9 by a poll of Liga MX English-language writers and broadcasters.
Pabón scored both goals in Rayados’ 2-0 win on Saturday evening against Chivas de Guadalajara.
And what goals they were! Just 120 seconds into the match, Celso Ortiz found the Monterrey captain unmarked about 30 yards out. The Colombian didn’t think twice about shooting and scored a bomb that Raúl Gudiño had no chance at stopping.
Goal of the season candidate? Easily, but Pabon wasn’t finished there.
After going down a man when Rodolfo Pizarro received a red card in the second half, a fast break was what Monterrey needed to keep its lead. Rogelio Funes Mori controlled the ball well with his chest before handing it off to Pabon who decided ‘why not have another crack from the same distance?’ It paid off well in the end and Rayados won 2-0.
Being Monterrey’s biggest playmaker, Pabon also contributed one key pass, three accurate crosses, two successful dribble attempts, and showed off his grit by winning eight duels and two tackles. SofaScore gave Pabon an 8.9 match rating.
Pabon’s two goals helped position Rayados one point behind rivals and Liga MX leaders Tigres UANL going into the Clásico Regiomontano this weekend.
Pabon is the second Monterrey player to receive Player of the Week honors this season, the first being Rogelio Funes Mori for Jornada 4.
