Apertura 2018 Result: Lobos BUAP 1-2 Monterrey

Rayados needed extra time to pull out a late win over Lobos BUAP in the Apertura after dominating the match, and so the team will be looking for more dominating win this time around.

Last week against Pumas UNAM, Rayados fell into their old, bad habit of scoring early and going a tad to sleep. Just as against León a few weeks ago, they gave up a goal late and allowed the other team to pull out a draw.

Hopefully Lobos BUAP’s surprising start to the season will keep Monterrey on their toes. Lobos BUAP were in 2nd to last place when the two teams met in the Apertura, but this time Lobos are in 9th place with seven points after their crosstown rivals, Puebla, nicked a win at the Estadio Jalisco over Club Atlas to go one spot above them Friday night. This has been a surprising start for Lobos, who are starting to put a good amount of distance between themselves and Veracruz in the relegation table.

This match could see the Monterrey debut for Miguel Layun, who joined from Villarreal a little over a week ago. He didn’t make the bench for the match against Pumas, but it’s likely he will get a chance to start on the bench before making his way to the starting lineup, just as Argentina international Maxi Meza did earlier in the season. Look for him to get a chance to come in during the second half.

Rayados have a chance to retake the lead in the Liga MX table after their rivals, Tigres UANL, won on Friday night in Veracruz. A win would take them top of the table by one point before next weekend’s match against Monarcas and then on to Concacaf Champions League play the following week.
