Monterrey will be looking to avenge a 2-1 loss to Puebla in the Apertura in this weekend’s Liga MX fixture and stay undefeated and on top of the table in Liga MX. Meanwhile 12th place Puebla is only two points away from 5th place Necaxa in the table, and could get themselves into a Liguilla place if the results go their way this weekend.
Monterrey played away in El Salvador in Concacaf Champions League action, drawing 0-0 with Alianza FC, and with the return leg coming up, Diego Alonso has to not only rotate the team a little bit, but he also has to get the team to focus on the task at hand, instead of looking past their Liga MX opponent. Puebla came from behind to shock los Rayados after losing to them in Copa MX play, so Monterrey must still take this team and this game seriously, even with an important game coming up.

Rayados va con este 11 vs Puebla:
Marcelo Barovero
Edson Gutiérrez
César Montes
José Basanta
Leonel Vangioni
Celso Ortíz
Carlos Rodríguez
Dorlan Pabón
Maximiliano Meza
Rodolfo Pizarro
Ángel Zaldívar
If the early lineups are to be believed, it looks like Alonso will be saving some of the “big guns” for the match against Alianza, with Rogelio Funes Mori the most noticeable change, along with Jesus Gallardo, Jonathan Gonzalez, Nico Sanchez, and Miguel Layun all rested as well. Of course with as deep a lineup as Monterrey has, it’s not as big of a deal as it normally would be with most teams, since los Rayados can call upon players such as Leonel Vangioni, Celso Ortiz, and Angel Zaldivar to come off the bench.
Monterrey has the talent to win this match, as they honestly have enough talent to win almost all of their matches. However, this team tends to rely a bit too much on Funes Mori to create a lot of their offense, so if he’s indeed rested for the mid-week CCL match, then Zaldivar, Pabon, Meza, and Pizarro all have to step up their game and provide a goal or two.
