Monterrey travel to El Salvador to take on Alianza FC in San Salvador, looking to avoid the fate that befell crosstown rivals Tigres UANL or the nightmare loss that Toronto FC suffered on those team’s away legs in the first round of the CONCACAF Champions League.
Monterrey have geared up with an extremely deep bench this season, and this will be the first time this season that Diego Alonso will have to balance his starting XI between a midweek cup match and a weekend Liga MX match. However, with the addition of Miguel Layún, Maxi Meza, Ángel Zaldívar, and Adam Bareiro to an already stacked team, Alonso spoiled for choice, and certainly whatever lineup he chooses will be heavily favored to get a result.
"Honestly, I personally don't know anything about the team," Monterrey attacker Aviles Hurtado says of #CCL opponent Alianza. Says coach Diego Alonso will get team up to speed.

A refreshingly honest answer. Much better than the generic, "We know they're a great team!" https://t.co/aVM430Igxe
Alianza FC comes into the match as a relative unknown to most Liga MX and MLS fans (and also players, apparently), but they’ve been one of the most successful Salvadoran teams in international competitions and are favorites to win the league after going undefeated in 2017.
While Monterrey will be favored in this match, hopefully last night’s results will alert the side that is looking to win at least one trophy this season. Los Rayados have an opportunity to not only make a statement win, but also grab the headlines after a rather shocking display from the favorites so far, with only the Houston Dynamo, the “weakest” of the Liga MX/MLS teams in the competition getting a win last night.
Monterrey is undefeated in league play so far this season, and if they take this game seriously, then they should stay that way in the CCL as well.
