The Mexico National Team will have the chance to officially seal their place in the Semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League when this Friday they visit Panama at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez.
As ever, and perhaps also overshadowed by the recent success of the Mexico U-17 team that just made the final of the U-17 World Cup (!!), much of the chatter around the senior national team has little to do with the actual analysis of the match. Right now the headlines seem to be centered around the reasons why Chicharito and Miguel Layun are not port of this senior national team call up, and truth be told, in general this inaugural CONCACAF Nations League has been greeted with large indifference by most El Tri fans.
Obviously, this is not fault of the 23 players that were actually called up, who still need to get a good result away to Panama. As has been the theme throughout this competition. coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino has opted for a mixture of both youngsters and regulars, with perhaps Raul Jimenez being the biggest name in the roster.
Los Canaleros have not been at their best in recent months, and optimism ahead of this match is quite low. Though they somewhat competed in their last match against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, El Tri ended up takin that one by a score of 3-1. Here, Mexico just need a point and they will join Honduras in the final four of the CONCACAF Nations League.
