A quick double from the hosts marred what was otherwise a rather dominant performance from Santos Laguna, as Lobos BUAP won 2-0 Sunday afternoon. Goals from Leonardo Ramos and Yago Da Silva were the difference makers for Lobos.
The game started out a bit slow, but an early mistake early on almost cost Santos. Matheus Doría and Hugo Nervo played lateral balls to one another while waiting for the midfield to open up a bit. Lobos BUAP forward Leonardo Ramos timed a run perfectly, forcing Nervo to make a bad touch and freeing the ball. Ramos ran on to it but was just edged out in a foot race between him and Santos goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco, who cleared the ball upfield and out of danger.
In the 16th minute, a turnover deep in their own zone lead to Julio Furch hitting a pass to Ayrton Preciado on the left. Preciado ran in unopposed on goal and shot hard and low, forcing Antonio “Toño” Rodríguez to make a nice kick save. The ball went back to Furch, however he was in traffic and his hurried shot missed the mark.
Santos was able to control the narrative for most of the early part of the game. Lobos would often play balls forward that were more hopeful than purposeful, and Santos would take advantage. Sweeping lateral passes in the back would often lead to a pass that would penetrate deep into the midfield either through the center or along the wings.
In the 36th minute, Santos had another golden opportunity when Brian Lozano hit a great low cross into the box. Bryan Garnica played a perfect dummy to Ayrton Preciado, but Preciado’s shot went high over the net.
In the 40th, Lobos would have their first good look when on an indirect free kick from the Lobos right, Aldo Cruz hit a hard shot along the ground that made its way through traffic and onto frame. Michael Orozco redirected the shot onto Jona Orozco, and Michael Orozco’s follow up attempt was smothered and saved by Jona.
In the 56th minute it would be Lobos BUAP that would break the deadlock when Jonathan Orozco played a poor ball out toward Doría, who would be dispossessed by Yago Da Silva. Yago would hit an onrushing Leonardo Ramos, whose header would beat Jona Orozco.

Minutes later, Yago would almost double the lead when he hit a shot from 20 yards out. Jona Orozco got his fingertips on the ball and pushed it just enough that it caromed off of the post and out. In the 66th minute, Yago would succeed in doubling the lead when he was able to hit a shot from almost the same spot he tried minutes earlier. This time his arcing shot went past a diving Jona Orozco.
In the 73rd, Santos almost drew one back when Diego Valdés hit an arcing shot that beat Toño Rodríguez, however the ball crashed off of the crossbar and out. At the other end, Oscar Macias would hit a shot from distance that rang off of the post and out. Santos would push for a goal, but ultimately Lobos would be able to snuff out any potential scoring chances, leaving the hosts the happier side on the afternoon. The three points won push Lobos BUAP even further up the relegation table, leaving them currently 0.3385 clear of Veracruz.
Lobos BUAP will host Mineros de Zacatecas on Tuesday to start the Copa MX tournament before heading to Veracruz to take on Tiburones Rojos on Friday in Liga MX play. Santos isn’t in the Copa MX due to being in the Concacaf Champions League tournament, so they’ll host Monarcas Morelia on Sunday.
