Pumas started their season in terrible fashion as they tied 0-0 at home against Veracruz in a game lacking emotion from both sides. Pumas had an early goal disallowed and they seemed to not recover from it as they played uninspired football for most of it, especially in the second half. Veracruz will come away happy from getting an away point in a venue where few people expected much from them. Still, they never came close to creating much and wasted a couple of mistakes from Pumas that could have given them a win.
Pumas started the first half with an early goal that was later called off. Pablo Barrera made a great pass and Felipe Mora went through two defenders to score it past keeper Sebastian Jurado. The celebrations were all out until ref Francisco Chacon went to the VAR and called it offside.
After the goal and maybe because of it, Pumas controlled the game but failed to do anything with it. It wasn’t until the middle of the first half that they finally got a great opportunity. Defender Alejandro Arribas was able to head the ball and forced Jurado to a great save. The ball fell to defender Luis Quintana but he was way to slow to react and the Veracruz defense was able to clear his shot.
Jurado once again came up huge with a long range shot that he was able to deflect, this time to his defense.
Veracruz never threatened until the final minutes when they won a ball from a Pumas defender but wasted the counter with a weak shot by Christian Menendez.
The second half came out as a chore for both sides. Juan Manuel Iturbe came on for Pumas to try to add spark and did so for a few minutes before having to come out because of an injury.
Neither Pumas nor Veracruz looked to create much danger until a header from Felipe Mora went just wide. Veracruz came close to win it after another Menendez counter and another miss from him as he hit it straight to the goalkeeper.
The final minutes had Pumas finally waking up from its lethargy but it was not enough and Pumas left with a disappointing tie at home against one of the weakest squads in Liga MX.
What should worry Pumas fans the most is how poor the team looked without an in form Carlos Gonzalez. Gonzalez had an awful performance today and it disrupted the team, who failed to have any other offensive spark besides some plays by Mora. Pumas will need to quickly turn around for their home debut on Tuesday in Copa MX against Atlas and then a visit to Necaxa, who will be making their league debut after their match against America was postponed. Veracruz will not have Copa MX activity this week and will await their home debut against Lobos BUAP on Friday.
