Elias Hernandez scored with a penalty in the first half as Cruz Azul earned their first victory of the 2019 Liga MX Clausura with a 1-0 win at Tigres.
Neither side was able to register a strong opening to the match, but the hosts came closest when in the 12th minute Enner Valencia forced Jose de Jesus Corona to a brilliant save from a one-time shot.
Tigres then twice had a shot at taking the lead from a corner, but Andre-Pierre Gignac and Guido Pizarro’s headers were just wide of Corona’s goal.
In the 33rd minute, a penalty was called after Julio Dominguez was pulled inside the box by Guido Pizarro. Elias Hernandez stepped up and fired past Nahuel Guzman to give La Máquina the lead.
The second half saw Tigres push forward for the equalizer, but it was Cruz Azul who had the more dangerous chances. In particular, Jonathan Rodriguez proved a handful for the Tigres defense, first striking the woodwork in the 60th minute before hitting the side netting moments later.
In the 80th minute, Tigres’s best chance to equalize went begging when Eduardo Vargas could not put his shot on target from a Jurgen Damm pass.
At the end, Tigres departed their home stadium amongst a chorus of boos, as Cruz Azul clinched their first big win of the season.
