A bizarre match that eventually saw Tigres come out on top thanks to an André-Pierre Gignac golazo.

Goals by André-Pierre Gignac and Eduardo Vargas capped a strange game that saw several stoppages in play as Tigres UANL downed hosts Tijuana 3-0

Neither side was able to get much going in the early portion of the match. The big news occurred in the 23rd minute when a light standard in one corner of the stadium failed, causing a long delay. Play eventually resumed, and there were sixteen minutes of added time to the first half.

In stoppage time, play started to pick up. Luis Fuentes hit a right-footed blast that forced Nahuel Guzmán to make a save. Minutes later, André-Pierre Gignac would have an opportunity, but his shot went high and wide of Gibran Lajud’s net. Miller Bolaños was sprung on a fantastic ball from Diego “Pulpo” González but his shot went just over the bar.

After the half, Enner Valencia hit a drive from about 30 yards out that Gibran Lajud got his fingertips on. It would be an ominous harbinger of what was to come.

With the night already having taken a strange course, it should have been no surprise that the first goal was a fluky own goal. Off of a corner kick by Tigres, Luis Fuentes took a hack at the ball in an attempt to clear it but mis-hit it and the ball went in.

In the 72nd minute, André-Pierre Gignac would do what André-Pierre Gignac does: cuts in from the left wing to hit a right-footed shot that curls into the goal and onto highlight reels.

The game would have to be stopped again around the 75th minute as it appeared that a fan fell from the stands behind the goal and into a basement area. The game would continue, but would be stopped minutes later as medical personnel would remove the fan for treatment.

In the 86th minute, Eduardo Vargas would put the game even further out of reach when he hit a laser off of a corner kick that went between the legs of Pulpo González and into the back of the net.

The home crowd was none too pleased with the performance, and boos and jeers rained down as the final whistle sounded. Xolos will host Atlante in Copa MX play on Tuesday before heading to Guanajuato to face rival León on Sunday. Tigres will return to Nuevo León to host Cruz Azul in Liga MX play on Saturday.
