Atlas’s Osvaldo Martinez netted a late goal, but it wasn’t enough as Club América snatched a 2-1 victory at the Estadio Jalisco to earn a winning debut to their 2019 Liga MX Clausura.
Atlas, full of confidence after winning their first two games of the semester, got to a good start, but it was América’s Cecilio Dominguez who looked the most threatening in the opening first 30 minutes of the match.
The Rojinegros did manage to get close to scoring when Hernan Burbano was denied by a diving save from Agustin Marchesin.
In the 57th minute, Atlas were unfortunate to give the ball away inside their own half, and Henry Martin made sure to make the Rojinegros pay, slotting the ball past goalkeeper Jose Hernandez to give América the lead.
Las Águilas grabbed their second 12 minutes later when a long range shot from Cecilio Dominguez was deflected into the back of the net.
But Atlas refused to lie down, and in the 90th minute, Osvaldo Martinez chested down a pass and smashed home a stunning goal from distance to put los Rojinegros within range.
At the end, however, there would be no dramatic equalizer as Las Águilas held on for the win.
