Toluca had Rubens Sambueza sent off as Atlas claimed their first win of the season on Friday. The Rojinegros led at halftime before Ulises Cardona’s second half goal sealed an agonizing victory over the Diablos Rojos.
As expected, Toluca had the better of the opportunities early in the game, but an Atlas set-piece finished with Jefferson Duque firing the Rojinegros into the lead.
The visitors were then reduced to 10 men early in the second period when Sambueza was shown a straight red for throwing an insult at the referee.
Atlas weren’t unable to capitalize until the 77th minute when Ulises Cardona met a Clifford Aboagye cross with a stupendous volley to put the score at 2-0.
The result as Atlas’s first win of the season after initially going ten weeks without a win in Liga MX.
For Toluca, on the other hand, it was their first Liga MX defeat in four matches.
