The round of 16 in Mexico’s Copa MX really couldn’t come at a worse time for Monterrey. They are currently missing a number of key players, and added Rodolfo Pizarro and José Basanta to the long injury list during Sunday’s Clásico Regio against Tigres, as both players are set to miss an extended period of time.

These injuries add to the list that already includes Avilés Hurtado, Alfonso González, and Jonathan Urretaviscaya, with the last two missing the rest of the season and more.

Monterrey is still reeling from the effects of the violence before this past weekend’s Clásico Regio against Tigres, and a victory in the Copa MX could start to get some positive news back into the headlines for los Rayados.

Los Rayados are also in need of a win, as they haven’t won in Liga MX in over a month, having last gotten a win against Lobos BUAP in Puebla back in August, and even then, Monterrey needed a late goal to seal victory. Monterrey also beat Mérida in the Copa MX, but that still featured an absurd, highlight reel goal against and also required yet another late winner to get the victory.

Monterrey fans are getting restless and frustrated with the lack of success, but it’s doubtful, especially with the long injury list, to see a full-strength side later today. As much as a win would help, a win against Club Tijuana in Liga MX this weekend is far more important.

Expect to see the youngsters out there on the pitch against Zacatepec, who are currently ninth in the league below Liga MX, the Ascenso, with nine points from eight matches. This is normally a match you would expect Monterrey to win without breaking a sweat, but with Monterrey out-of-sync in the league and having lost about half the starting lineup will mean that Monterrey will just want the Copa MX to be over.
