America beat Dorados 3-1 and Chivas won away to Morelia 2-1 to both win their Copa MX groups. While both teams had already clinched a spot in the next round, it wasn’t until their victories Tuesday night that they both won their groups. America was able to get past a spirited Dorados team and awful weather and field conditions to get their victory. Meanwhile, Chivas went away to Morelia and were able to claw back after being 1-0 down to get all 3 points. The defeat also means Morelia will know face Alebrijes de Oaxaca to see if they can go through as one of the best second-placed teams. On the other hand, Dorados will do the same against an already eliminated Veracruz.
In the earlier game, América faced Dorados. Las Águilas were expected to dominate and they met expectations early on. A great play by forward Henry Martin was finished with a great left-footed shot by the forward that was deflected in for the first goal of the evening.
América kept dominating and they would soon take the 2-0 lead. A cross into the area off a free kick was deflected by the Dorados defenders to the path of Bruno Valdez. The Paraguayan defender scored the 2-0, and although the Dorados defenders protested for an offside, the goal counted.
It looked like America was going to win easily but a long range shot from Albergo Garcia, cut the lead in half. The 2-1 at halftime score was a lot closer than the game deserved.
The second half looked as it may be more of the same but the rain that had been falling in the Azteca all throughout the game really intensified at halftime and early in the second half. The rain made the conditions terrible for an Azteca field that, although is one of the best in Mexico, couldn’t keep up with the large amounts of rain falling in Mexico City. The field got flooded in many areas and the game suddenly turned, with Dorados having most of the possession while America decided to absorb the pressure and counter.
At the end, however, Dorados wasn’t able to create many chances in the final third, and in the final minutes of the game, Cecilio Dominguez was finally able to finish a counter for the final 3-1 score.
After the America game, Chivas played their last Copa MX group stage game away in Morelia. Chivas was leading the group and would remain in the lead regardless of the result, but a win by Morelia would take them just one point behind Chivas with one game remaining. Morelia seemed to be the more urgent team at first but both teams cancelled each other out for the first 30 minutes of the first half.
The stalemate was eventually broken by a great strike by Chilean Sebastian Vegas and a bad mistake by Chivas goalkeeper Miguel Jimenez. The long range shot was a solid strike but the replay showed that Jimenez should’ve done better.
The goal woke up Chivas and they started to go more on the offensive. It paid off just prior to halftime when Javier Lopez made a great cross that Angel Sepulveda chested into the back of the net to tie the match.
The second half continued with both Chivas and Morelia having opportunities that they missed. Miguel Jimenez had to leave with an injury and Goalkeeper Antonio Torres made his debut with Chivas. Then after a great counter attack, Jose Godinez finished with a great left footed shot to give Chivas the 2-1 lead.
After the goal, Torres made some great stops and Chivas rode the game out to win and clinch the top spot in the group.
America and Chivas going through to the next round is great news for this Copa MX tournament. Both are the most popular teams in Mexico and will make for great matchups in the next round. It also comes after both teams missed the last Copa MX tournament because they were playing the CONCACAF Champions League tournament, which Chivas ended up winning.
For Herrera, this is a positive after some stumbles in Liga MX, while for Chivas it’s great boost as it’s the fifth consecutive win for them in both Copa MX and Liga MX. They will now turn to Liga MX where America faces one of their most accessible away games at Lobos BUAP. Chivas will have a bigger test at home to Pachuca.
