Los Rayados will take on Lobos BUAP tonight in Puebla, as Monterrey looks to be keep apace with the leaders on top of Liga MX. Top of the table Cruz Azul will take on Toluca at the Estadio Azteca earlier in the evening, and second placed Santos Laguna take on Xolos in Tijuana at the same time as this match.
Monterrey will still be without the services of Rogelio Funes Mori, as the striker is still recovering from an injury. Luis Madrigal has an opportunity to establish himself as a legitimate starting striker in the top division in Funes Mori’s absence, but so far he has been unable to be consistent enough to be considered for a larger role. His miss last weekend against Pumas did him no favors towards earning himself any additional playing time at Monterrey, and despite his gaudy goal-scoring totals in the Ascenso, he has a very short window of opportunity to prove himself at this level.
The match against Pumas saw the return of Dorlan Pabón to the starting lineup in league competitions, and he was one of the most important players on the pitch for los Rayados. Both Pabón and Avilés Hurtado provided spark down the wings for Monterrey, and it was only through luck and the posts that Monterrey did not score more goals against Pumas. Expect those two, plus Rodolfo Pizarro, to start against Lobos BUAP.
As for Lobos BUAP, the avoided relegation only by paying a large “fine” to the league and to the team that finished top of the Ascenso MX. They will be looking to avoid that fate this year. They are still bottom of the relegation table, and have some work to do if they are to be able overcome Veracruz and avoid a second straight “relegation.”
Monterrey should be able to win this match easily, but this is Liga MX, so anything can happen. Look for a motivated Monterrey team to put some pressure on Lobos BUAP, and even if los Rayados are having trouble scoring while Fues Mori is out, their backline remains as solid as ever.
