Jornada 4 in Mexico’s second division of professional fútbol was full of exciting action. Here’s everything you need to know about how all 15 teams fared in the división de plata!

Mineros de Zacatecas 1 - 1 FC Juárez

Mineros de Zacatecas opened up Jornada 4 of Ascenso MX action as they played host to undefeated league leader FC Juárez at the Estadio Carlos Vega on Friday evening. The match was a high affair for much of the first half with both teams using the first 45 to feel out their opposition. Around the 35th minute mark the first chance of the match fell to FC Juárez, but los Bravos were unable to put the ball into the back of the net as the shot from the top of the box went just wide of the goal. There wan’t really another clear chance on goal until the 68th minute when Elson Dias Jr. Intercepted an errant pass and raced down the field and fired a shot into the bottom corner of the net passed the outstretched arms of the keeper to give the team from the frontera a 1-0 lead. Los Bravos had several opportunities to put another goal on on the scoreboard, but they just couldn't quite find the final bit of quality needed to extend the lead. This eventually came back to bite them as Guillermo Martínez scored from inside the area in the 82nd minute to ensure that both teams split the points. With the draw, los Bravos extend their unbeaten run to 6 matches across all competitions in the 2018 Apertura season.

Atlético de San Luis 0 - 0 Club Atlético Zacatepec

Atlético de San Luis hosted Zacatepec at the Estadio Alfonso Lastras in the second match of Jornada 4. The match was a very cagey affair with not a lot of chances for either side. The best cgoalscoring opportunities for both sides were half chances at best and about midway through the second half it became painfully obvious to everyone in attendance that the match was going to end level. It was just one of those games where neither side really got going and in the end both were content to take a point out of the ordeal.

Venados FC 1 - 1 Celaya

Venados hosted Celaya in the final Friday match of Jornada 4. From the start of the match, Celaya looked like the much better side. The visitors were seemingly knocking on the door from the opening whistle of the half. However, it wasn't until the 36th minute when Martín Abundiz finally made the hosts pay for allowing Celaya to dominate the match when his goal from just inside the area flow past a helpless Venados keeper. After the goal it seemed as though Celaya’s intensity began to drop off allowing Venados back into the match. After laboring for much of the second half to get back into the match, Venados finally broke through as Victor Lojero scored a 79th minute goal to ensure that the two sides split points.

Alebrijes de Oaxaca 3 - 2 CF Correcaminos

Alebrijes de Oaxaca hosted CF Correcaminos in one of the most exciting matches of the 2018 Ascenso MX Apertura season so far. It took the hosts 30 minutes of back and forth fútbol to finally put themselves onto the scoresheet. Edgar Alaffita got onto the end of a long cross and with his first touch sent the ball past a flailing Correcaminos goalkeeper. It was quite the impressive goal considering that the shot straight from the cross wasn’t struck sweetly with Alaffita’s right foot. It looked like the goal actually flew in off of his shin. Regardless, there was nothing the keeper could have done. 30 minutes after the first goal found the back of the net, Joaquín Hernández pounced on a horrible defensive mishap from the hosts to fire a screamer into the back of the net from close range. Things went from bad to worse for the hosts as Luis Venegas deflected a weak cross into his own net in the 81st minute of the match. The entire play was a calamity of errors. First, the keeper needlessly flew off his line and completely missed the ball. Then, a week cross was rolled past two defenders and awkwardly deflected into the back of the net. Alebrijes didn’t let the own goal define the match. Just two minutes later they earned a penalty off of something that looked straight out of a video game. A long pass to the goalkeeper was head onto the patch of an attacker who got obliterated by the Correcaminos keeper who came flying off his line to prevent the goal. The ball went just wide of the net and about 15 seconds after the chaos it was awarded as a penalty in favor of the home side.

Correcaminos looked absolutely deflated following the penalty. Just five minutes after allowing the equalizing goal Alebrijes capitalized on a turnover and executed a beautiful counter attack to score the winning goal of the match. Rarely is a counterattack of this quality on display in the Ascenso MX. Just take a look for yourselves.

Cafetaleros de Tapachula 1 - 2 Atlante FC

Cafetaleros hosted Atlante along the southern border with Guatemala on Saturday night. The match got off to a quick start as the home side sprung out to a 1-0 lead after Christian Bermúdez’s goal in just the 17th minute of the match. Following the early goal there were several chances for both sides to score. However, neither were able to take advantage before the end of the first half. Atlante came out of the half playing much better fútbol then the hosts from the southern frontera. Their superiority was rewarded with a 66th and 76th minute goals to take home all three points from their road trip.

Dorados de Sinaloa 0 - 1 Potros UAEM

It wouldn't be too far of a stretch to say that Dorados de Sinaloa have had a disastrous start to the 2018 Ascenso MX Apertura season. Through their first three matches of the season (Dorados didn’t play in Jornada 2) the team from Sinaloa find themselves in dead last in the table on 1 point with a -4 goal difference. The match against Potros UAEM at home was supposed to be an opportunity for Dorados to bounce back from the 3-0 defeat they suffered on the road in Ciudad Juárez last week. However, things didn’t quite go according to plan. La Gran Pez looked dead in the water from the opening whistle. They did absolutely nothing offensively for the entirety of the match and Potros UAEM finally made them pay with an 83rd minute goal to take home all three points.

Leones Negros U de G 2 - 3 Cimarrones de Sonora

The final match of Jornada 4 between Leoned Negros and Cimarrones at Estadio Jalisco on Sunday afternoon didn’t disappoint as a whopping five goals found the back of the net. It was the visitors from Hermosillo, Sonora who got out off to a fast start in the match scoring two goals within the first 35 minutes of the match. Los Leones Negros are another one of the teams having a nightmare start to the 2018 Apertura season. Falling behind by two goals early didn’t do anything to help the team from Guadalajara turn around their fortunes. Shortly before the half, however, the home side found a way onto the scoresheet thanks to a free header just in front of the goal. As the second half got underway, Leones Negros found themselves chasing the match and giving up a third goal as a Cimarrones attacker flew through the box to connect with a cross and put the visitors back up by two goals.

In the 90+2nd minute the home side would add a consolation goal.
