Monterrey look to build upon last week’s win 1-0 over Pachuca at the Estadio Hidalgo as they stay on the road to face off against Club León. Avilés Hurtado scored the only goal in the match as Pachuca looked to limit the depleted Monterrey side, but los Rayados were able to overcome los Tuzos in a match that showed a lot of rust for both sides. Pachuca never really looked as if they would score, and after the goal, Monterrey seemed content to see the match out for all three points.
Leon are coming off of an interesting season. The made a head-scratching decision to sign former LA Galaxy & US captain Landon Donovan out of retirement for the Clausura 2018, but instead of building upon their 7th place finish in the Apertura 2017, Leon missed the Liguilla altogether. Donovan and Leon parted ways after the Clausura 2018, to the surprise of no one, as it seemed age had finally caught up with the veteran.
Leon goes into this season without Elías Hernández, as the forward departed Leon to go to Cruz Azul, but they still retain the services of captain Mario Boselli. Leon lost their first match of the season away at Tigres UANL, so they will be getting their matches against teams from Nuevo Leon out of the way early this Apertura.
Monterrey should be favored in this match, even if all of the starting lineup isn’t ready to go. Hurtado is as good as ever, and the defence was still pretty solid last weekend. It will also be another week for Rodolfo Pizarro and Jesus Gallardo to have settled into the lineup and another week for Diego Alonso to work with the squad, and his first after a Liga MX match.
Boselli can still cause a defense problems, even at the age of 33, but the rest of the team did not seem to improve very much in the off-season. A draw would be a good result for Leon against Monterrey, but Monterrey will be looking to continue on their good run to start the season before hosting their first home match of the season next Saturday against Querétaro.
