Pumas will start their Copa MX campaign with an away trip to Tampico, as they face Tampico Madero. Pumas will be coming off a better than normal Copa MX campaign, in which they went into the Quarterfinals but lost to eventual champion Necaxa. The loss at home was especially bad because they were at home and Necaxa went down a man but still managed to come out with the win. This tournament comes as a new opportunity for the Universitarios against a Tampico Madero team that will be missing their best player, Eduardo Aguirre, because of the Central Americana and Caribbean games.

Pumas hasn’t had a good time in Copa MX. They have only been to the second round once, last season. They then moved to the Quarterfinals after beating Lobos BUAP. But the home loss to Necaxa brought the dream crashing down, although Pumas was able to bounce back in the Liga MX and qualify to the Liguilla before having another painful elimination at the hands of America. If the past is any indication, it’s to be expected that they will go with an alternate squad to the one they will use in the league. Still, although it’s a tough away game in Tampico, Pumas will benefit from them missing their best player in Eduardo Aguirre. There is also the fact that even with an alternative squad, Tampico is still an Ascenso MX team and Pumas should have a great opportunity to start the tournament in a positive note. If Pumas take the opportunity, they might build enough momentum to achieve a better run than last season’s.
