Herrera, who is a product of Pumas UNAM’s youth academy, joined Santos Laguna in 2013 and scored four goals for the Guerreros.
It is not yet known if Rangers’ ultimate intentions are to sell Herrera or if there is a buyout clause, but the striker had previous reported interest from clubs across Mexico, including Chivas.
Herrera is the second Mexican to leave the club in recent months after Carlos “Gullit” Peña, now at Necaxa, rejoined Pedro Caixinha at Cruz Azul for the 2018 Clausura.
Rangers is now coached by former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, who will be taking part in his first major coaching role in his career.
Santos Laguna begin their Liga MX season on Monday against Lobos BUAP.
