Following his participation in the 2018 World Cup, Carlos Vela may consider international retirement. The 29-year-old was one of El Tri’s best players in Russia, but speaking for the first time after the tournament, he made it clear his future with the Mexico national team is a big question mark at the moment.

“I don’t know,” said Carlos Vela about accepting future call-ups. “When the federation decides first what changes are going to take place, we will see what players continue and what players don’t”.

Vela has always had a rocky relationship with the Mexico national team, and he has made it clear in past that if he doesn’t feel comfortable wearing the green shirt, he will simply not accept any call-ups. In the past, Vela rejected the chance of playing for Mexico at the 2014 World Cup.

Vela also gave his thoughts on his good friend Antoine Griezmann, who will be participating in the World Cup Final with France.

“I wish Griezmann the best,” Vela said. “Hopefully he can be champions with France. He has worked hard to be where he is now.”
