Rafael Marquez to take the role of sporting president at Atlas

Rafael Marquez called it a day on his playing career following Mexico’s 2-0 defeat to Brazil. Now, Ell Kaiser” is on the brink of joining his boyhood club Atlas as sporting president of the Rojinegros. According to a report from ESPN, Rafael Marquez is expected to take the role in two weeks.

It was long assumed that Marquez would take a more administrative role following his retirement, and while it will take some time for him to learn and get used to his new role, Atlas are excited in having one of their most iconic players in their history working in their front office.

“He is a person that has plenty of qualities we need to take advantage of, especially in matters of leadership and group management,” told club president Gustavo Guzman to ESPN.

Marquez has always been a voice of change in Liga MX, Most recently, he has been one of the leading faces in the movement to have Liga MX players unionize against team owners.
