Toulouse winger and Sweden international Jimmy Durmaz was subject to racism after his free-kick against Germany led to Toni Kroos’s late game winner.

Durmaz, who is of Turkish roots, posted a video with his teammates on Sunday condemning the hate messages he has received following the incident.

“I’m humbled and overwhelmed from all the lovely messages I’ve received from all of you”, his message on Instagram read. “It really warms my heart after what happened last night. Keep posting love so it will overcome all the hate out there.”

Obviously, any type of bigotry is unacceptable, and it is quite admirable for the team to stand up for their teammate and take a stand against what we can all agree on should never be seen in our beautiful game.

Sweden have a tough task ahead as they will take on Mexico on Wednesday with a spot in the Round of 16 of the World Cup on the line.
