The Mexican Federation received a fine of $10,000 and a warning on Wednesday for “discriminatory and insulting chants” from their fans during their win over Germany. The famous chant, which has been the subject of much debate among Mexican fans, was directed at goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

El Tri had been warned on numerous occasions in the past, but most attempts to stop Mexico fans from chanting the anti-gay slur have fallen short of a satisfactory ending. Most recently, in a press conference on Tuesday, midfielder Marco Fabian suggested that instead of the chant, Mexico fans sing “Cielito Lindo”.
At the moment, it is unclear what FIFA mean by imposing a more severe punishment, but for a long time now it has always been rumored that a possible ban from the Estadio Azteca could be a possibility.
As for fans who partake in the chant, FIFA has also threatened to take away their Fan ID’s, a document that serves as a Visa to enter Russia and grants access to the stadium.
