FC Porto’s Diego Reyes has been ruled out of this summer’s World Cup in, the Mexican federation confirmed on Tuesday.

Despite being pictured on board the plane that took El Tri to Moscow, Russia, Diego Reyes was deemed not fit enough to play in this month’s big tournament. Reyes was widely considered a doubt for Mexico’s group opener against Germany on Sunday, and with only four days to go, the Mexican federations finally decided to announce his unavailability for Russia.

Diego Reyes has not played since injuring his hamstring, and his absence will no doubt be another big blow for coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who already lost key center-back Nestor Araujo with injury earlier in the year.

Reyes will be replaced by Pachuca midfielder Erick Gutierrez. The 22-year-old has already been training with the squad and looked sharp in a tune-up friendly against Wales back in late May. Mexico are currently waiting IFFA approval.
