El Trafico? Call it what you want to call it, but the first rivalry game between the LA Galaxy and Los Angeles Football Club is set to be a memorable one when both teams face off on Saturday at StubHub Center. There is plenty of storylines on this one and just about everything you want to see in a fútbol match.
For starters, a local derby always assumes grand proportions, but the first one ever is historic. This is the first of what promises to be many in years to come, and there is always something special about winning the first one.
Form-wise, LAFC have looked unstoppable after just two games, winning away at the Seattle Sounders and 5-1 against Real Salt Lake. On the other hand, the LA Galaxy have not looked as hot, but seem to be slowly coming together after earning a point last week in their visit to the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The first Galaxy-LAFC match will also have a Mexican flavor to it. Giovani dos Santos and Jonathan dos Santos will be taking on fellow compatriot Carlos Vela. While the dos Santos brothers have struggled with injuries early on, Vela has performed at an unexpectedly high level. Floating right behind the main striker, Vela has adapted well to coach Bob Bradley’s tactics and is sure to be a nightmare running at the Galaxy defenders.
Speaking of nightmares to opposing defenders, perhaps the biggest storyline in this match is one Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who could potentially make his Major League Soccer debut on Saturday against LAFC. Zlatan made one heck of an introduction in his press conference on Friday and claimed that the “lion is still hungry”. Go on Zlatan, there is no better match to show it.
