Liga MX Clausura Week 9: Top 5 Goals of the Week

Long shots. Lots of long shots.

Tigres UANL v Morelia - Torneo Clausura 2018 Liga MX
Rafael Carioca (far right) celebrates with teammates after scoring the second goal for Tigres in their Jornada 9 match against Morelia on Feb. 24.

5. Jesus Isijara

Santos and Cruz Azul were deadlocked in a 0-0 draw for much of their game until Isijara surprised the entire Estadio TSM with a cross that ended up going into the back of the net. The Liga MX’s top goalscorer Djaniny would add one more later on and that was curtains for La Maquina as they lost 2-0 on Sunday.

4. Martin Barragan

Necaxa and Puebla duked it out in an entertaining match that featured two of the league’s most surprising liguilla-fighting teams battling for the three points. It looked like La Franja was about to get the upper hand on Nexaca, but not if Barragan had anything to say about it. The 26-year-old came off the bench to score a fantastic long shot that spoiled Puebla’s celebrations and forced them to share points.

3. Sebastian Palacios

Being named the replacement of former Tuzo Jonathan Urretaviscaya has to come with some heavy pressure. After making just one start in the Clausura, Palacios finally got his goal against Leon on Saturday. The former Boca Juniors attacker took the ball himself on the fast break and went on to let one fly from outside the box, soaring past William Yarbrough. Pachuca defeated La Fiera 2-1.

2. Rafael Carioca

If you’ve seen any highlights of Rafael’s time in Brazil, you know this man is quite capable of memorable goals. Unfortunately, Tigres fans never had the pleasure of seeing him score one with the yellow-and-blue uniform. That is, until Saturday. The defensive midfielder wasted no time in stopping the ball and launched a powerful strike right into the top-left corner of Sebastian Sosa’s goal. Tigres defeated Morelia 2-1.

1. Raul Ruidiaz

The two-time scoring champion is having a down season (for his standards) in goals so far, but the Peruvian definitely did not forget how to score. Not much to say about this one. Just watch it. An easy early contender for goal of the season.
