Esperance came through a penalty shootout to beat Chivas in the 5th place match of the Club World Cup.
Like in their first game against Kashima Antlers, Chivas created the better opening to the match and took an immediate lead in the fifth minute when Gael Sandoval fired the Mexican side into the lead from the penalty spot.
But Esperance equalized through their own penalty after a handball was called inside the box in the 38th minute.
In the second half, Esperance had two players sent off, leaving the Tunisian side down to nine men to close out the game.
After a 1-1 stalemate, the game went to penalties. Esperance was the first to miss before Hedgardo Marin sent his attempt over the crossbar.
Players from both sides then went on to find the back of the net, while also exchanging misses. It was then in the sudden death round when Isaac Brizuela failed to convert and Chamseddine Dhaouadi rolled in the decisive penalty kick to give Chivas a losing finish to 2018.
