Alexis Vega scored an injury-time equalizer as Toluca managed to earn a 2-2 draw with Club América in a dramatic night at the Estadio Nemesio Diez.
Las Águilas made a purposeful start to the game and took an early lead when a rebound inside the area following a free-kick fell to Emanuel Aguilera inside the box to smash into the back of the net.
With 21 minutes gone, Toluca had their first big chance of the game after Rubens Sambueza had a long-range free-kick blocked by Agustin Marchesin’s fingertips.
The chance inspired Toluca and put the visitors on the back foot. Moments later, the Diablos Rojos equalized. A short corner kick found Fernando Tobio in the far post, as he beat his marker to score.
But back came América, and in the play immediately after, Bruno Valdez rose alone inside the box to head in the go-ahead goal.
As halftime approached and with the score 2-1 in Las Águilas’ favor, Oribe Peralta had a golden opportunity to double América’s lead, but Alfredo Talavera turned his shot away with a good save.
The hosts tried to get back on the front foot after the break, but Club América’s resolute defending kept Toluca’s chances at a minimum.
Deep into injury time, Toluca’s Alexis Vega had the last word. After grabbing a rebound at the edge of the box, Vega weaved his way past three defenders with one move before placing the ball into the back of the net and sending the Nemesio Diez into a frenzy.
Vega’s goal could prove crucial, as both teams are set to meet again on Sunday, with Toluca needed to win the game with any scoreline to progress to the Semifinals. Meanwhile, Club América need at least a draw of two goals or less to go through.
