The 2018 Liga MX Apertura Quarterfinals will officially get underway on Wednesday as league leaders Cruz Azul take on Gallos Blancos de Querétaro at the Estadio Corregidora.
After winning the Copa MX title and finishing the regular season in first, La Máquina is flying high into the Liguilla. Pedro Caixinha’s men were undoubtedly the best team in the first 17 weeks of the tournament and look more determined than ever to end their 21-year-drought without a league title.
But in front of them will be a Querétaro team that arrives to this Liguilla as the surprise team of the tournament. Coach Rafael Puente Jr. has done a wonderful job in his first six months with the team and comes into this game knowing his side already beat Cruz Azul once at home during the regular season.
Unfortunately, Gallos Blancos will have to deal without one of their star defenders, as Miguel Samudio is suspended for this First Leg. Samudio’s absence comes as a big blow for the hosts, given the onus will be on the Gallos Blancos to keep a clean sheet to go into the Second Leg with some sort of hope.
Will Cruz Azul take advantage and carry a lead into the Second Leg? Or will the “Curse of the Superlider” show its face again?
