Monterrey are looking to to seal up their spot in the Liguilla with a week to spare, while Necaxa are looking for a good end to their season that started with so much promise.
Necaxa beat Monterrey 1-0 all the way back in July in the 2018 Supercopa, after winning the Clausura 2018 Copa MX over Toluca last torneo. After a good start to the season, including a win over Club América where they looked pretty good, the wheels came off of Necaxa. The club fired their manager back in October after a rather rough patch of form. The “new manager bounce” hasn’t materialized as the brass at the Aguascalientes based club would have wanted, as they’ve drawn to lowly Club Atlas and then lost 6-2 (!) to Pachuca.
Even though it’s being played away from home, this match should be very winnable for Monterrey, and if they are to get any sort of momentum going before the Liguilla, this is the kind of team and the kind of match that los Rayados need to be putting away.
Los Rayos haven’t won a match in Liga MX since a mid-September’s upset of Cruz Azul, and they’ve drawn against both Veracruz and Club Atlas in the past three matches, the two worst teams in the table. Not surprisingly, Necaxa is hovering third from bottom with 13 points from 16 games.

Monterrey need to step up, and with the team getting healthier by the day, they need to build up a good winning streak going into the Liguilla. It might seem a bit far-fetched at this point, but it’s still possible for Monterrey to get to fourth place in the table and the home field advantage for the first round. If Monterrey are serious about being a candidate for winning the league this season, this should be a game that they easily win.
